2016 Summer Camp Leadership Positions 

Make a difference in the lives of girls and become a Latinitas Summer Camp Leader! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experiences to help local girls by providing a positive, enriching experience throughout July camps. Latinitas is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Latina youth through media and technology and executes the mission by publishing a bilingual webzine for Latina girls, facilitating an after-school program, mentoring girls, and hosting innovative media workshops in the community. Our interactive educational summer camp program focuses on teaching girls fun ways to express themselves through a variety of media and technology projects that include writing, photography, graphic design, filmmaking, radio production, web and app design and more!

CAMP DATES

JULY 5-8 – CINE CHICA – In the Cine Chica Camp, girls will learn about independent filmmaking, publishing and music while exploring the multiple channels for promotion and success of their talent.

JULY 11-15 – FASHION FORWARD – Can you spot trends? Girls will have fun with fashion writing, photography, reviews, videos and will create their own fashion magazine app.

JULY 18-22 – TECH CHICA – Are you into video games or new technologies like social media? Girls will go through the development of their very own video game while learning the basics of using social media as a tool, and getting some hands on experience in working with websites!

JULY 25 – 29 – HEALTHY CHICA – Yoga, acupuncture, Zumba and meditation are just a few things on the menu for Latinitas Healthy Chica camp. Girls will use blogging, photography, video and other multimedia forms to explore healthy living choices.

Seeking a FULL TIME Summer Camp Leader and a PART TIME Summer Camp Assistant 

Duties Include: 

-Provides leadership and guidance to 15-25 girls per week

-Encourages positive team environment and serves as a role model

-Leads team-building and confidence-boosting activities and games

-Efficiently utilizes summer camp assistants and volunteers

-Co-facilitates this media and tech empowerment program for girls (3rd-8th graders)

-Collaborates with guest speakers and demonstrators to lead group sessions

-Develops and implements activity ideas for summer camp

-Leads field trips, special events & projects as needed

– Follows safety regulations and emergency procedures, responds to critical incidents, performs routine first aid tasks, and ensures well-being of campers

-Abides by all camp rules and regulations, enforces them among campers, applies appropriate behavior and management techniques

Qualifications:

The ideal leader will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants should be organized, resourceful, creative, enthusiastic, and proactive. We are looking for someone who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience working with children preferred. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. This position is recommended for students with a major in communications, social work, or education. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet navigation. Interns must be able to establish and maintain a good rapport and harmonious relationships with campers, parents and staff. A background in one of the following areas is helpful: journalism, writing, editing, photography, web design, graphic design, radio, or film. However, prior media experience is not required.

Training:

Program leader and assistant must attend a mandatory training session in June. We will review camp logistics, procedures and outline of planned curriculum for the entirety of the camp season.

Program Leader Internships (Fall & Spring)
Intern Description

Want to make a difference in young girls’ lives? Want to be a true role model? Latinitas is now hiring Club Leaders for our educational outreach programs that start at the end of August. We need mature and committed interns and volunteers who can lead girls and teens through digital media publishing, production and cultural literacy lessons during our after-school programs that take place on a weekly basis from August-December. Female college students gain leadership experience, develop communication skills, build media expertise, practice public speaking skills and learn presentation and facilitation techniques.  Program leaders deliver lessons in writing, blogging, photography, web and graphic design, video game and app development focused on themes such as self-esteem, identity, college attainment, healthy living and more.

Duties include

  • Attending a mandatory Club Leader training
  • Leading afterschool clubs on a weekly basis
  • Mentoring Latina youth
  • Promoting Club Latinitas and recruiting interested participants
  • Providing the program coordinator with ideas, information, & potential resources
  • Alerting the appropriate program coordinator when sensitive situations arise
  • Attending the bi-weekly meetings to discuss observations and new lessons
  • Obtaining written permission slips for field trips
  • Providing feedback to Program Coordinators
  • Administering pre & post surveys and ensuring submission to Program Coordinators
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with club
  • Promoting the club to community centers, libraries and local schools
  • Serving as a liaison with school staff
  • Taking attendance at every  club meeting
  • Preparing handouts & materials before each scheduled club

Intern Requirements
This position requires 15 hours of work per week. Must be available at least two afternoons (3-6pm) a week. We offer for-credit internships. This is a non-paid intern position, but the experience is priceless. The ideal intern will possess excellent interpersonal communication skills. Prior experience working with youth is preferred. Interns should be enthusiastic, organized, resourceful, and creative. We are looking for a self-starter who is able to work independently and is willing to take advantage of this opportunity to develop their professional skills. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. Training will be given as necessary.

Editorial & Multimedia Internship
Intern Description

LatinitasMagazine.com is the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth. Latinitas is a dedicated to being a strong voice for young Latinas, telling the stories of our community and serving as a forum for self-expression. This national award-winning online magazine is currently recruiting college interns to serve as magazine writers and editors of our on-line magazine. From quinces to fashion, advice to volunteering, college to mentoring, dating to entertainment, and wellness to culture, Latinitas focuses on topics related to being a Latina teen today with a Latina power theme. College students who are interested in developing their writing and multimedia skills and getting published in LatinitasMagazine.com are invited to apply.

Duties include:

  • Submit feature stories (12 minimum per term)
  • Maintain a monthly blog at Mylatinitas.com
  • Participate in monthly editorial surveys to give us ideas for future topics
  • Actively participate in our online community (post comments, respond to forum questions, etc.)
  • Participate in conference calls or Skype calls with the Latinitas team
  • Assist with editing the work of peers
  • Create multimedia projects for Mylatinitas (videos, podcasts, photo essays, slideshows)
  • Conduct interviews and gather quotes for feature stories
  • Write advice columns
  • Participate in writing contests

Communications Internship
Intern Description

Want to make a difference in a girl’s life? Help Hispanic girls succeed by volunteering with Latinitas. Become a Communications Intern and help girls build confidence and skills. Latinitas is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Latina youth through media. We publish LatinitasMagazine.org, the first bilingual webzine by and for U.S. Hispanic girls. We host after-school clubs and outreach programs which help girls express themselves through media. We are seeking talented individuals to volunteer for our busy communications committee. Communications Interns will have a unique opportunity to learn about non-profit public affairs through hands-on activities and exposure to a wide range of activities and projects.
This department requires volunteer interns to help further the public image of the organization and to help create wider exposure in the Austin & El Paso, Texas area. We have plenty of opportunities to fill your portfolio while having a lot of fun and helping girls at the same time! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experiences for several interests and academic backgrounds. This position is recommended for students with a major in Communications, Business, Marketing or Spanish, however, anyone interested is very welcome to apply. Within our communications department, we offer the following intern positions: fundraising, public relations, web design, graphic design, editorial, photography, event planning, multimedia, advertising and marketing.

  • Fundraising: Assist with raising funds through special events & sponsorships.
  • Graphic/ Web Design: Design promotional materials & update website.
  • Photography: Develop stock photography, cover events, & create photo essays.
  • Event Planning: Aid in organizing conferences and special events.
  • Multimedia: Create video, audio and flash projects for web publication.

Graphic Design Internship
Job Description

Latinitas conducts a wide variety of workshops camps and clubs, so we are always in need of promotional material as well as supplemental material for curriculum.  This internship requires that you are familiar with Photoshop and/or InDesign as well as the workflow necessary to complete the tasks assigned.

Duties include

  • Commit 10-15 hours per week
  • Evaluate graphic design needs within the organization
  • Actively participate in our online community (post comments, respond to forum questions)
  • Assist with editing the work of peers
  • Complete flyers, banner ads and other instructional material for the organization

Intern Requirements
If you are interested in a career in graphic design, want to develop your skills and want to make a difference and want to get published, then this is the perfect opportunity for you. We have plenty of opportunities to fill your portfolio while having a lot of fun and helping girls at the same time! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experience for several interests and academic backgrounds. Video Editing Internship
Job Description

Our girls LOVE video projects but we sometimes don’t get a chance to teach the editing programs in each of the clubs.  Your job as the Video editing intern will be to put together the projects created in the clubs and workshops and get them online on our multiple channels.

Duties include

  • Commit 10-15 hours per week
  • Evaluate video editing needs for the organization
  • Actively participate in our online community (post comments, respond to forum questions)
  • Assist with editing the work that comes back from the workshops and camps
  • Manage the media and projects you are working on on the Latinitas Server

Teen Outreach Assistant

Intern Description
Latinitas is accepting applications for a Teen Outreach Assistant to carry out our mission specifically with
our teen/ high school programming. Latinitas is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering
Hispanic girls through media and technology. Latinitas Magazine is the first digital magazine made for
and by young Latinas. Teen Outreach Assistant will assist with the high school clubs, planning, outreach
and promotion of the Spring Break Camp. Club activities include lessons in writing, editing, web and
graphic design, photography, radio and video broadcast and more. You will manage clubs of 10 – 15
Hispanic girls and/or teens up to twice a week in addition to office hours. Training is provided.

We are looking for someone who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience
working with children and/ or teens is preferred. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. This
position is recommended for students with a major in communications, social work, or education. The
ideal intern will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Interns should be organized,
resourceful, creative, enthusiastic, and proactive. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating
proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet navigation. Interns must be able to establish and maintain a
good rapport and harmonious relationships with students, staff, and school administrators. Having a car
is strongly encouraged, but not required.
Volunteer leaders are welcome. Many interns arrange to receive academic and/or service learning
credits for their work through their school. Work Study is also available. Position starts at the beginning of
each academic semester; interns must be able to commit 15 hours per week for an entire school year.
Interns must be available from 2:30-6:00 pm at least two days a week. Hours and days of work are
flexible.
Duties include:

  •  Mentors youth and develop a one-on-one relationship with youth
  •  Carry out the Latinitas mission of empowering Latina youth
  •  Plans and assists at media and technology workshops
  •  Facilitates lesson plans at a weekly after-school program
  •  Act as a liaison between Latinitas and school personnel
  •  Organize field trips, special events & projects as needed
  •  Promotes program on school campuses and recruits club members
  •  Acts as editor for junior reporters
