Latinitas’s life blood is the volunteers and interns that offer their time to our efforts.  We staff up every semester and are looking for the best and the brightest of the candidates who apply.  Latinitas is also an Official Off-Campus Site for the UT Workstudy Program.

Volunteer Club Assistants (Fall & Spring)

Time Commitment: 4-5 days a week, 2:30 pm to 6pm, Saturdays

Description
Want to make a difference in young girls’ lives? Want to be a true role model? Latinitas is now looking for Club Volunteers for our educational outreach programs. We need mature and committed volunteers who can guide girls and teens through digital media publishing, production and cultural literacy lessons during our after-school programs that take place on a weekly basis from August-December and January-May. Female college students gain leadership experience, develop communication skills, build media expertise, practice public speaking skills and learn presentation and facilitation techniques.

Our clubs serves girls ages 9-14 and focus on encouraging girls to build confidence through creative multimedia expression. Girls in our clubs will participate in hands-on activities such as writing, media literacy, photography, filmmaking, blogging and other more techy projects such as video game design, app creation and more. Our clubs connect girls with positive role models and encourage girls to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

Duties include

  • Mentors youth, encourages positive team environment and serves as a role model
  • Digital media, technology and cultural literacy education
  • Assists leader with team-building and confidence-boosting activities and games
  • Assists with implementation of activity ideas for Club Latinitas
  • Co-organizes field trips, special events & projects as needed
  • Reports twice monthly for staff training, mandatory staff orientations in Fall and Spring
  • Assists with communication with school officials on Latinitas program updates
  • Follows safety regulations and emergency procedures, responds to critical incidents, performs routine first aid tasks, and ensures well-being of participating girls 
  • Abides by all Club Latinitas rules and regulations, enforces them among participants, and applies appropriate behavior management techniques

Volunteer Requirements
This is a non-paid position, but the experience is priceless. Ideal volunteers will possess excellent interpersonal communication skills. Prior experience working with youth is preferred. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, organized, resourceful, and creative. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to sign up. Training will be given as necessary.

Location: Latinitas Office at 4926 E. Cesar Chavez St. Austin, TX 78702 and an Elementary or Middle School within the Austin district

Public Relations and Community Engagement Intern

Job Type: Part-Time Volunteer Intern (10+ hours per week)
Compensation: unpaid; volunteer internship (college credit – optional)

Intern Description
Want to make a difference in a girl’s life? Become a PR and Community Engagement Intern and help girls build confidence and skills. Latinitas is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Latina youth through media. We publish LatinitasMagazine.org, the first bilingual webzine by and for U.S. Hispanic girls. We host after-school clubs and outreach programs which help girls express themselves through media. We are seeking talented individuals to volunteer for our busy spring semester. PR and Community Engagement Interns will have a unique opportunity to learn about non-profit public affairs through hands-on activities and exposure to a wide range of activities and projects.
This department requires volunteer interns to help further the public image of the organization and to help create wider exposure in the Austin & El Paso, Texas area. We have plenty of opportunities to fill your portfolio while having a lot of fun and helping girls at the same time! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experiences for several interests and academic backgrounds. This position is recommended for students with a major in Communications, Business, Marketing or Spanish, however, anyone interested is welcomed to apply.

Intern Requirements
This position requires 10-15 hours of work per week. Hours and days of work are flexible. Interns are encouraged to gain experience and skills geared toward their interests! We offer for-credit internships. This is a non-paid intern position, but the experience is priceless. The ideal intern will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Interns should be enthusiastic, organized, resourceful, and creative. We are looking for a self-starter who is able to work independently and is willing to take advantage of this opportunity to develop their professional skills. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office and internet navigation. Website and graphic design experience is a plus. Training will be given as necessary.

Duties include:

  • Events: Aid in organizing and attending special events such as after-school fairs and community events
  • Marketing/Advertising: Help develop & implement marketing & advertising plan
  • Public Relations: Update media contact list, write press releases for upcoming events
  • Editorial: Write feature stories for online & print publication
  • Graphic/ Web Design: Design promotional materials & update website

Graphic Design Internship

Job Type: Part-Time Volunteer Intern (10+ hours per week)
Compensation: unpaid; volunteer internship (college credit – optional)

Job Description
Latinitas conducts a wide variety of workshops camps and clubs, so we are always in need of promotional material as well as supplemental material for curriculum.  This internship requires that you are familiar with Photoshop and/or InDesign as well as the workflow necessary to complete the tasks assigned.

Duties include

  • Complete flyers, banner ads and other instructional material for the organization
  • Evaluate graphic design needs within the organization
  • Actively participate in our online community (post comments, respond to forum questions)
  • Assist with editing the work of peers

Intern Requirements
If you are interested in a career in graphic design, want to develop your skills and want to make a difference and want to get published, then this is the perfect opportunity for you. We have plenty of opportunities to fill your portfolio while having a lot of fun and helping girls at the same time! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experience for several interests and academic backgrounds. This position is recommended for students with a major in Journalism, English or Communications or Design.  The ideal intern will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Interns should be enthusiastic, organized, resourceful, and creative. We are looking for a self-starter who is able to work independently and is willing to take advantage of this opportunity to develop their professional skills. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office and internet navigation. Video editing, photography, and Website experience is a plus. Training will be given as necessary.

Editorial & Multimedia Internship

Job Type: Part-Time Volunteer Intern (10+ hours per week)

Intern Description
LatinitasMagazine.com is the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth. Latinitas is a dedicated to being a strong voice for young Latinas, telling the stories of our community and serving as a forum for self-expression. This national award-winning online magazine is currently recruiting college interns to serve as magazine writers and editors of our on-line magazine. From quinces to fashion, advice to volunteering, college to mentoring, dating to entertainment, and wellness to culture, Latinitas focuses on topics related to being a Latina teen today with a Latina power theme. College students who are interested in developing their writing and multimedia skills and getting published in LatinitasMagazine.com are invited to apply.

Duties include:

  • Submit feature stories (12 minimum per term)
  • Maintain a monthly blog at Mylatinitas.com
  • Participate in monthly editorial surveys to give us ideas for future topics
  • Actively participate in our online community (post comments, respond to forum questions, etc.)
  • Assist with editing the work of peers
  • Create multimedia projects for Mylatinitas (videos, podcasts, photo essays, slideshows)
  • Conduct interviews and gather quotes for feature stories
  • Write advice columns

2016 Summer Camp Leadership Positions 

Make a difference in the lives of girls and become a Latinitas Summer Camp Leader! We offer meaningful and fulfilling experiences to help local girls by providing a positive, enriching experience throughout July camps. Latinitas is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Latina youth through media and technology and executes the mission by publishing a bilingual webzine for Latina girls, facilitating an after-school program, mentoring girls, and hosting innovative media workshops in the community. Our interactive educational summer camp program focuses on teaching girls fun ways to express themselves through a variety of media and technology projects that include writing, photography, graphic design, filmmaking, radio production, web and app design and more!

CAMP DATES

JULY 5-8 – CINE CHICA – In the Cine Chica Camp, girls will learn about independent filmmaking, publishing and music while exploring the multiple channels for promotion and success of their talent.

JULY 11-15 – FASHION FORWARD – Can you spot trends? Girls will have fun with fashion writing, photography, reviews, videos and will create their own fashion magazine app.

JULY 18-22 – TECH CHICA – Are you into video games or new technologies like social media? Girls will go through the development of their very own video game while learning the basics of using social media as a tool, and getting some hands on experience in working with websites!

JULY 25 – 29 – HEALTHY CHICA – Yoga, acupuncture, Zumba and meditation are just a few things on the menu for Latinitas Healthy Chica camp. Girls will use blogging, photography, video and other multimedia forms to explore healthy living choices.

Seeking a FULL TIME Summer Camp Leader and a PART TIME Summer Camp Assistant 

Duties Include: 

-Provides leadership and guidance to 15-25 girls per week

-Encourages positive team environment and serves as a role model

-Leads team-building and confidence-boosting activities and games

-Efficiently utilizes summer camp assistants and volunteers

-Co-facilitates this media and tech empowerment program for girls (3rd-8th graders)

-Collaborates with guest speakers and demonstrators to lead group sessions

-Develops and implements activity ideas for summer camp

-Leads field trips, special events & projects as needed

– Follows safety regulations and emergency procedures, responds to critical incidents, performs routine first aid tasks, and ensures well-being of campers

-Abides by all camp rules and regulations, enforces them among campers, applies appropriate behavior and management techniques

Qualifications:

The ideal leader will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants should be organized, resourceful, creative, enthusiastic, and proactive. We are looking for someone who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience working with children preferred. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. This position is recommended for students with a major in communications, social work, or education. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet navigation. Interns must be able to establish and maintain a good rapport and harmonious relationships with campers, parents and staff. A background in one of the following areas is helpful: journalism, writing, editing, photography, web design, graphic design, radio, or film. However, prior media experience is not required.

Training:

Program leader and assistant must attend a mandatory training session in June. We will review camp logistics, procedures and outline of planned curriculum for the entirety of the camp season.
