Makayla is a part of the sorority Sigma Gamma Phi in which she participates in community service events throughout Western New York. She is passionate about putting an end to bullying and works closely with the organization Kindness Above Malice. She loves to make people feel welcomed and she always takes the initiative to make that happen.

What challenges has she overcome?

Makayla was raised in The Bronx in a low-income neighborhood and worked her way up to being accepted to and enrolling at SUNY Fredonia. While back home, Makayla juggles a part time job and an internship at Matriarch Records.

What makes her a leader?

She has been a part of the Latin Student Union executive board, Latinos Unidos since her freshman year, now in her junior year she is the president of the club. She is an RA in a freshmen residence hall, she is a student government rep, and is well involved with her sorority.

What extra-curricular activities is she involved in?

Makayla loves to dance, she is a member of Fredonia’s first and only hip hop dance team, Envied Expression. As mentioned before she is dedicated to Latinos Unidos , but also frequents the other student union’s meetings and events such as Pride Alliance, Hillel, the Women’s Student Union, and the Black Student Union where she once held the position of Vice President. She loves the music industry and has participated in internships at Warner Brother Records and Matriarch Records.

How is she a good example and positive role model to other girls?

She is a good example for other girls because she works diligently with what she has been given and makes the best out of it. She is one of the most prominent leaders on campus, which any girl should aspire to be.
