MARCH 2012 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Latinitas Spring Break Camp Monday – Friday, March 12-16, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Location: Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland).

Latinitas will host a hands-on multimedia arts camp for middle school girls (4th – 8th grade) during Spring Break vacation. Volunteers are needed that week to help set up, serve as a guest speakers, mentor the girls, lead group creative expression activities, take photos and clean up. Volunteers are also needed to help promote the Spring Break Camp to potential campers and parents. Latinitas Teen Media Academy

Monday- Friday, March 12-16, 12:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. Location: Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland).

Latinitas will be hosting a media academy for teen girls (13 – 18).  This will feature hands-on media training from professional media producers and field trips to local media stations. Volunteers are needed that week to help set up, serve as guest speakers, serve as chaperones for scheduled field trips, guide girls through the schedule activities, take pictures and clean up. Latinitas Inspiring Fashionistas Fashion Show

Sunday, March 25, 12:00pm – 8:00pm. Location: Always and Forever Ballroom (3333 Yarbrough).
Fashionistas are teaming together to host the Latinitas 2nd annual charity girl empowerment fashion show featuring clothing for girls, teens and women. Guests will enjoy a fashion show, listen to live music, watch a video screening, view an exhibit of youth artwork, see dance performances and hear an inspirational guest speaker. We need volunteers to help us with setting up and breaking down the fashion show. We also need volunteers helping out at the front door, at the registration table, welcoming guests, with raffle tickets, at the silent auction, at our photo booth and assisting models. We’re also looking for volunteer performers, photographers to capture the event and volunteers to do hair and make up for the models. We have 2 possible shifts available for the event. Viva La Voz CAMP Chicas Advancing in Media Project

Saturday, March 17, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Location:  Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland).

Latinitas invites teen girls (ages 13-18) to participate in writing & multimedia workshops. Girls will be writing magazine stories and producing media projects to be published in our online magazine. Volunteers are needed to help mentor the teen participants during the scheduled workshops, help with the planning process, and serve as guest speakers with media related experience. Teen Leadership Institute

Saturday, March 17, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Location:  Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland).

Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute is a leadership program for high schools girls where they will learn how to become a strong voice in their community. Volunteers are needed to help with the planning the leadership workshops, arranging guest speakers to speak at the workshops, and volunteers are also needed the day of the event to help with set up, run through and break down.  We are also seeking Latina leaders to serve as guest speakers for our upcoming monthly workshops. Latinitas Volunteer Orientation

Tuesday, March 13 and March 20, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland #502).

Latinitas will be providing a volunteer orientation to any potential volunteers. The orientation will provide information about Latinitas and how to become involved in helping Latinitas with the various projects including girl empowerment programs, Alliance for Latinitas and the editorial and multimedia team. Creative Expression Saturday Camps & After-School Clubs

Saturday, March 10, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Judge Marquez Library Branch (610 N. Yarbrough).

Saturday, March 17, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Richard Burges Library (9600 Dyer).
Held Weekly After School at Various Public Housing Centers

Female volunteers are needed to assist our workshop leaders and mentor girls

(in grades 4-8th) with hands-on media arts activities in our Saturday Camps and After-School Clubs. Our Saturday camps occur the 2nd (Eastside) & 3rd (Northeast)  Saturday of every month, so on-going mentoring is gladly accepted as well.  The After-School Clubs typically take place from 4:30-6:30 weekly at various community center around town.  If you are interested in helping, please email latinitas.sonia@gmail.com or call and leave a message at 915.219.8554.
LATINITAS COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS
International Women’s Day at UTEP
Thursday, March 8, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m., Location: UTEP – Leech Grove.
UTEP is commemorating International Women’s Day by organizing an event to celebrate women. Latinitas will be part of a community fair where we will have a table promoting the organization.Volunteers are needed to distribute information and promote Latinitas to anyone that comes to our table. Segundo Barrio Festival

Saturday, March 10, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Lynda Patterson Institute (517 S. Florence).

Segundo Barrio is hosting its 2nd annual free community fair to promote the barrio’s cultural and historical heritage. As part of this event, Latinitas will host an informational table at the community fair (outside booth) to promote Latinitas and to do face painting for kids. Volunteers are needed to distribute informational materials, do face painting and to talk to people that visit our table. KidsPalooza

Saturday, March 28, 10:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Location: Downtown El Paso (Art District).
Downtown El Paso will host its 2nd annual “Downtown KidsPalooza” where children will take on to the streets to various workshops, activities and concerts happening at the event. Latinitas will hold a booth where children will be able to do arts and crafts activities. Volunteers are needed to help distribute promotional information about Latintias and assist children in arts and crafts activities. Girl Scouts 100 Anniversary

Saturday, March 10, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Location: New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum (4100 Dripping Springs Road).
The Girl Scouts invite the public to celebrate a century of building girls of courage, confidence and character. The event will feature a wide variety of entertainment for the entire family. Latinitas will host a booth where girls will do poetry and craft activities. Volunteers are needed to assist in the poetry and craft activities as well as distribute information about Latinitas. UTEP Mother, Daughter/Father, Son Career Day

Saturday, March 24, 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Location: UTEP.
UTEP is hosing its 25th Annual Career Day to expose children that come from families with very little resources to different careers and role models and to encourage them to succeed. Latinitas will be part of the event presenting about careers in the media industry and to show youth how they can create their own magazines. Volunteers are needed to make a presentation about media careers and guide youth in creative writing activities.  Volunteers are also needed to assist the presenter.
