Latinitas Volunteer Orientation

Girl Power Fest – Planning & Event Prep
Week of April 1- April 5, Office Hours (10:00 a.m. – 6:00p.m.. Location: Latinitas Headquaters (1359 Lomaland) Saturday April 6th, TBA
Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute is hosting a girl empowerment conference to promote leadership and confidence among local girls. Volunteers are needed to help to do some office work related to the conference during the week. Volunteers are also needed to help plan the conference, promote the event, invite youth, recruit entertainment and and obtain donations for goodie bags and door prizes that will be offered at the conference. Volunteers can sign up for any days and times that they are available during the week. Latinitas Girl Power Fest
Saturday, April 13, 8:45 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Location: UTEP Union Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute is hosting a Girl Empowerment Conference to focus on positive self esteem, leadership skills and community service for young girls. Volunteers are needed throughout the event to aid with set-up, help with breakdown, help workshop presenters, serve lunch, guide girls throughout the conference and serve as panelists. Chicas Write Now Workshop

In this wordweavers’ writing workshop, local teen girls 13-19 are invited to speak out and unleash their creativity through the pen. Volunteers are needed to serve as workshop assistants, mentors participants, help with set-up and break down and aid youth in these writing workshops. Butterfly Effect Benefit – Fundraising Planning Team

Latinitas invites team members to participate in our fundraising planning team to help us raise community awareness and funds to support our mission of empowering Latina youth. Volunteers are needed to help with the Butterfly Effect Benefit, our upcoming Mother’s Day fundraiser featuring a fashion show, spa day booths, entertainment and silent auction. Volunteers are needed to help with event planning such as recruiting beauty professionals for our spa day booths, coordinating entertainment, obtaining silent auction and door prizes and organizing decor. Housing Club Leaders & Mentors Wanted
Make a difference in a girl’s life as a Housing Club Leader. Latinitas hosts media enrichment clubs where girls can build confidence through creative expression. Latinitas partners with local public housing centers to host 6-week-long after-school clubs. Girls in our club will participate in hands-on activities such as creative writing, photography, arts & crafts, skits and more. Our clubs connect girls with positive role models and encourage girls to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. As a club leader, you would guide small team activities and motivate girls to foster a positive self-esteem. Club Leader volunteers commit 2 hours per week after school between 4:30-6:30pm for a 6 week period. Training, weekly activity guides and supplies are provided. UTEP College Day

We are hosting a college bound workshop to inspire local girls to learn about the importance of higher education and to guide them through the college preparation process. Volunteers are needed to assist with our college student panel to answer questions students may have, assist in escorting them around campus and help serve as workshop assistants aiding our college admissions speakers. Girl Empowerment Team Training
Friday, March 8th, from 4:00 p.m – 6:00 p.m. at Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland Suite 502).
Become a certified Latinitas leader by attending the Girl Empowerment Team training session. This leadership training program will provide guidance to female community volunteers (ages 18 and over) who would like to take on a leadership role in Latinitas’ girl empowerment programs. Participants will gain leadership, communication, teamwork, facilitation and media skills while learning how they can serve as positive mentors and role models for young girls. After the training, women leaders will be empowered as certified Latinitas leader and will commit to leading at least 4 workshops during the course of the next year. The training will offer hands-on workshops on how to implement Latinitas girl empowerment programs which focus on helping girls build confidence through creative multimedia expression. Creative Expression Saturday Camp

Latinitas will host a hands-on multimedia arts camp for middle school girls (4th – 8th grade) during Spring Break vacation. Volunteers are needed that week to help set up, serve as a guest speakers, mentor the girls, lead group creative expression activities, take photos and clean up. Extrenship Opportunity for High School Students

Arts & crafts, performance, art activites, and vendors are among a series of fun activities that we will be helding for this event. Urban Art Fitters- Mural Project

As part of a community service project, Latinitas members will help beautify and revitalize downtown by working with Urban Art Fitters in order to create a mural.Volunteers are needed to help us paint a mural. Downtown Mural Art Workshop

Latinitas has been invited to collaborate in the 1st Annual Warrior Women’s Weekend Wall Workshop where local female artists will create a one block art mural in order to celebrate mother earth and bring recycling awareness. Housing Club Leaders & Mentors Wanted
Make a difference in a girl’s life as a Housing Club Leader. Latinitas hosts media enrichment clubs where girls can build confidence through creative expression. Latinitas partners with local public housing centers to host 6-week-long after-school clubs. Girls in our club will participate in hands-on activities such as creative writing, photography, arts & crafts, skits and more. Our clubs connect girls with positive role models and encourage girls to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. As a club leader, you would guide small team activities and motivate girls to foster a positive self-esteem. Club Leader volunteers commit 2 hours per week after school between 4:30-6:30pm for a 6 week period. Training, weekly activity guides and supplies are provided. Creative Expression Saturday Camp

Tiara Tuesday
Tuesday November 27 from 5-9 pm at Fortis Restaurant (321 Chelsea Street El Paso, TX 79905).

Latinitas is hosting the ultimate ladies’ night out, Tiara Tuesday to fund raise money for Latinitas. Ladies will be able to enjoy a margarita and receive a manicure for $10 while being able to network with other professional women. It’s a happy hour for women with the theme of margaritas and manicures, but anyone can participate (there will be non-alcoholic options). Volunteers are needed to help with setting up for the event, helping out at the information table, registering and greeting guests, directing guests at the manicure tables, and photographing the event. We also need help with breaking down and packaging supplies which would be at the end of the event. Chicas Advancing in Media Project is a multimedia training program for teen girls with a focus on helping girls build confidence through multimedia expression. With bi-weekly meetings, teens will have an opportunity to get tips from the pros and learn about self-expression through writing, photography, audio production, poetry and film-making. The program includes hands-on media projects, community service projects, publishing opportunities in our magazine and field trips to local community events. Latinitas member are invited to join us for a special mural project in partnership with Urban Artfitters. Girls are invited to volunteer to help in designing and painting a mural downtown as part of this downtown beautification and revitalization project. Girls are asked to bring clothing that they don’t mind getting paint on and that is appropriate for the weather as well as a water bottle. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH ESSAY CONTEST
Latinitas Magazine is sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest for pre-teen and teen girls ages 11 to 18. The winner of the contest will win a back pack with prizes as well as having their winning work published in our magazine. Students are asked to write an essay between 300-750 words describing their favorite cultural tradition or sharing why they are proud of their heritage. Submissions are due on October 10th. The award-winning digital magazine is published monthly on-line with articles about culture, entertainment, profiles and youth issues. From quinces to dating, advice to fashion, college to entertainment, and wellness to culture, Latinas focuses on topics related to being a Latina teen today. This is a great way to earn volunteer hours, build your resume and add to your college applications. ABOUT LATINITAS
Latinitas is a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment and advancement of Latina youth through media, art, culture and technology. This grassroots coalition of women leaders provides media enrichment programs focused on helping Hispanic girls build confidence through creative expression. Girls in our programs publish LatinitasMagazine.org, the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth. Our youth-produced on-line magazine is focused on informing, entertaining and inspiring young Latinas to succeed.
